Present Continuous Tense

Though the simple present and present continuos tense are used interchangeably, present continuous 
 usually defines an act that is going on at the time of speaking.

The sentences with present progressive tense are used when:

  • Something is taking place now, while speaking and has a definite end as well. (Sesuatu yang sedang terjadi, dan sedang berbicara dan memiliki akhir yang pasti juga)
  • When something is already decided and arranged as well to perform it. (Ketika sesuatu sudah diputuskan dan mengatur untuk melakukan suatu hal)
  • To indicate an undesirable habit. (Untuk menunjukkan kebiasaan yang tidak diinginkan)

Structure:
(am/is/are + present partiple)
1.Use first form of the verb +ing
2. Singular 3rd person subject is
3. Plural 1st, 2nd and 3rd person and singular 2nd person subject use are
4. 1st person singular use am.

In other words, it is “Subject + be (is, am, are) + Verb + -ing + Object


Positive Negative Question
  • I'm (I am) reading a book
  • You're (You are) reading.
  • We're (We are) reading.
  • They're (They are) reading.
  • I'm (I am) not reading.
  • You're (you are) not reading.
  • We're (We are) not reading
  • They're (They are) not reading
  • Am I reading?
  • Are you reading?
  • are we reading?
  • are they reading?
  • He's (he is) reading a book.
  • She's (she is) reading a book.
  • It's (It is) raining.
  • He's not / he isn't (he is not) reading.
  • She's not / she isn't (she is not) reading.
  • It's not / it isn't (it is not) raining.
  • Is he reading?
  • is she reading?
  • is it raining?



Examples:

  • You are learning English now.
  • You are not swimming now.
  • Are you sleeping?
  • Why aren’t you doing your homework?

Near Future
Sometimes, speakers use the Present Continuous to indicate that something will or will not happen in the near future.

Kadang-kadang, Present Continuous untuk menunjukkan bahwa sesuatu  yang akan atau tidak akan terjadi dalam waktu dekat.

Examples:



  • I am meeting some friends after work.
  • I am not going to the party tonight.
  • Is he visiting his parents next weekend?
  • Isn’t he coming with us tonight?


Adverb Placement

The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc.

Contoh di bawah ini menunjukkan penempatan untuk tata bahasa kata kerja seperti : selalu, hanya, tidak pernah, pernah, masih, hanya, dll.

Examples:


  • You are still watching TV.
  • Are you still watching TV?

Active and Passive
Examples:


  • Right now, Budi is writing the letter. (Active)
  • Right now, the letter is being written by Budi. (Passive)
